The Nova Scotia Gaming Foundation (NSGF) is administered by the Department of Health and accountable to the Minister of the Office of Health Promotion. It operates at arms length from government and government departments. The role of the Foundation is to provide funding for projects involving research, education and treatment of problem gambling. The Foundation operates through a volunteer Board of Directors and a staffed office which assists the Board in assessing projects, managing, disbursing and monitoring the funds and working with applicants throughout the process.

The Foundation receives 1% retailer commissions from video lottery terminals (VLTs). This amount is matched in dollars by funding from the Nova Scotia Gaming Corporation. The Foundation is entrusted to use its due diligence in distributing the funds to worthy recipients through a range of grants designed to facilitate research, education and treatment of problem gambling in Nova Scotia.

Interested groups should apply for the grant that meets their needs. Initially, grant applications are reviewed for completeness. Then, an independent and impartial committee of reviewers with expertise in program delivery in addictions, and specific expertise in the area of the grant project area, assesses and evaluates the grant application. The review committee provides information to the Board about the suitability of the grant application. The Board makes the final decision to award, or decline, the grant application. This decision is usually communicated to the applicant within a week.
